Foshan
I still remember the pride shown on my friend’s face when he told me that he comes from the same hometown as Wong Fei-hung and Bruce Lee. Foshan is a famous cultural city with a very long history. It is also the origin of Southern Chinese Martial Art where many Wing Chun masters, such as Leung Jan and Ip Man, were born. During your stay in Foshan, it is almost a must to visit the places where the martial art masters developed their martial art philosophies, so as to know more about them and see if there could be some inspirations for you.
Apart from the martial art masters mentioned above, Foshan has also nurtured many outstanding talents including Zhu Jiujiang, a famous scholar and educator, Kang Youwei, an advocate of Late Qing Reform, and Zou Boqi, who was regarded as the “Chinese Newton” during the Qing dynasty. All these make Foshan a very remarkable place.
Foshan is not merely a cultural city full of talents. It is also hailed as the home of pottery, Cantonese opera, martial arts, yarns, Chinese medicines, casting, folk arts, cuisine and so forth. If you like architecture in Lingnan style, go to the Ancestral Temple (Zumiao), Nanfeng Kiln, Mount Xiqiao or Qinghui Garden. For cultural activities, you can enjoy lion dance, martial arts, Cantonese opera as well as dragon boat races.
Don't miss the diverse food choices in Foshan such as double skin milk, braised flat rice noodles, "bungsha"(a fried snack that looks like a golden butterfly) and spiced ham hock. Just refresh yourself with some nice meals, and immerse again in the nostalgic streets and seasonal beauty of Foshan anytime.
