Dongguan
If there is a synonym for Dongguan, you may think of it as a "major industrial town". After all, many enterprises in mainland China and from Hong Kong and Taiwan have set up factories in Dongguan in the past few decades. Therefore, Dongguan is worth having the reputation of the "world factory”.
Both Hong Kong and Shenzhen were once administered by Dongguan. The scene of the present “three cities” was not seen until the inception of Hong Kong and the establishment of the Shenzhen Special Economic Zone. Apart from the nicknames like “world factory” and “the town for retired Hongkongers”, the historical and cultural landscapes of Dongguan make it a great city for travelling.
Humen Fort is most well-known among all the historical sites in Dongguan, and it relates closely to the history of Hong Kong. Since Lin Zexu destructed opium in Humen, the UK, with its interests in opium trafficking damaged, attacked Guangzhou and occupied Hong Kong. This segment of history contributed to the colonial days of Hong Kong under British rule. From an ancient city in Lingnan to the world factory, Dongguan surprised the world again with one of the largest malls in the global – the South China Mall. All these have proved the rapid commercial development of Dongguan. It is time for us to explore more facets of Dongguan!

The average temperature over the year is 24°C. July is the hottest month, with an average temperature of 29°C; January is the coldest month, with an average temperature of 15°C. The average monthly rainfall is around 97.8 mm.
The official currency of Dongguan is Yuan Renminbi (CNY).
The official language of Dongguan is Putonghua. Cantonese is also widely spoken.
The Hakka culture is deeply rooted in and has become part of Dongguan with the settlement of many Hakka people in the city. The Hakka folk songs they sang in the nature have now become a unique folk art we can find on stage.
Dongguaneses love having Kirin dance during Lunar New Year. The dance is another Hakka tradition which has a history of more than 300 years. The wonderful choreography, which comprises artistic moves and martial arts, brings in motions and colours to the festivals.
The Indigenous Dongguanese lived by the sea. They had their food culture started with having oysters from freshwaters. With the acceleration of the domestic economic development in Dongguan after the Economic Reform and Open Up, the culinary cultures are more dynamic. You can see how culturally diverse in different towns in Dongguan when it comes to food and dishes.
The stir-fry, such as Humen Mud Crab, Xiansha fish ball and Houjie preserved sausage, is a highlight of Dongguan cuisines. The dishes are usually strong in taste. Most of the Dongguan dishes are savoury and a little bit sweet. They are the top choices for local people on summer days.

Metro: There is a Line 2 running from Dongguan Railway Station to Humen Railway Station. There are 15 stations. Fares from RMB 2-8.
Bus: There are different types of local buses running more than a hundred routes in Dongguan. There are also 7 sightseeing bus routes available for visiting tourist attractions such as Keyuan Garden and Yuan Chong Huan Memorial Park.
Taxi: Taxis are available in the city, with RMB 8 as the starting fare.
