When talking about Shenzhen, you may immediately recall the important moment of the Reform and Opening-up. The Shenzhen Special Economic Zone was established in 1980. It comprised initially only four districts, namely Luohu, Futian, Nanshan, and Yantian. Undergoing several development processes, it has become the most prosperous area in Luohu, where several landmarks, including Grand Theatre, the MixC Shopping Mall and KK100, are located, turning the area into an attractive tourist destination.
Transforming from a small town in Bao'an County in the ancient time into a first-tier city enjoying equal status as Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou, Shenzhen has undeniably strong economic power. As Shenzhen becomes increasingly prosperous, the entertainment, arts and cultural, and innovation and technology sectors are developed. Shenzhen was therefore listed as, by Lonely Planet, the second best destination to visit in 2018.

The average temperature over the year is 24°C. July is the hottest month, with an average temperature of 29°C; January is the coldest month, with an average temperature of 16°C. The average monthly rainfall is around 76.4 mm.
The official currency of Shenzhen is Yuan Renminbi (CNY).
The official language of Shenzhen is Putonghua. Cantonese is also widely spoken.
Being a Special Economic Zone, Shenzhen witnessed a rapid economic development and made its way to one of the four first-tier cities in China. Shenzhen is also a city of immigrants, making the local culture a widely diversified one. Meanwhile, Shenzhen preserves a lot of traditional and cultural heritages, such as Dapeng Ancient Fort and Nantou Ancient City. They both have a history of over 600 years.
The ways to celebrate different festivals in Shenzhen are similar to other cities in Guangdong Province. For example, people pay New Year calls and go to the flower markets during Lunar New Year; families enjoy reunion dinner on the Winter Solstice Festival.
Cantonese cuisine is commonly served on the dining table of Shenzhen people. As a city of immigrants, cuisines from different provinces can also be found here, such as Hunan, Suzhou and Shandong. The cuisine originated outside is slightly localised. People in Shenzhen also enjoy morning tea and night tea.
There are quite some gourmet streets selling different snacks and delicacies that you should not miss.

Bus: Buses runs in different districts in Shenzhen. There are green, light green and yellow buses running express line, main line and branch line. Fares are charged from RMB 1-10 according to the distance of your journeys. A regular ride is around RMB 2-3. You may enjoy 20-35% off discount using “Shenzhen Tong” (a reusable contactless stored value smart card for Shenzhen's transport system). An extra RMB 0.4 will be redeemed for interchanging within 90 minutes.
Metro: There are in total 8 metro lines in operation: Line 1-5, 7, 9 and 11, which cover areas of Futian, Luohu, Nanshan, Baoan, Longgang, Longhua etc. Shenzhen International Airport lies on Line 11. On this line, you may see the only business class compartment in Shenzhen metro. It is also the only line partially running by the sea. Fares are charged from RMB 2-14 according to the distance of the journeys. You may enjoy a 5% discount on fare using “Shenzhen Tong”.
Taxi: Taxis in Shenzhen are electric. The starting fare is RMB 10.
