What impression do you have on Zhaoqing? Some may think of natural sceneries like Dinghu Mountain and Seven Star Crags or delicacies, such as Zhaoqing-style sticky rice dumplings and Dinghu-style vegetarian dish. Do you know that Zhaoqing is also famed for being culturally rich?
Zhaoqing used to be called Duanzhou. The famous Duan inkstones of the four Treasures of the Study is originated from the then Duanzhou. The city was later renamed to Zhaoqing because Emperor Huizong of Song was titled as the Prince of Duan in Duanzhou. The emperor believed that the city was the beginning point of his success, he, therefore, named Duanzhou as Zhaoqing Fu. “Zhaoqing” is derived from a Chinese idiom, meaning the start of luck and auspiciousness.
In the middle of lakes and mountains like Dinghu Mountain and Seven Star Crags, you can find Buddhist and Taoist temples hidden from the bustles and inscriptions by scholars, like those scenes described in wuxia (or martial heroes) novels. In the suburbs to the North of the city, the interesting cultural tradition of “bombing lions with firecrackers” in the Lantern Festival can be found. You can listen to the remaining works of “Quyi”, an art form of singing and storytelling. For example, “Qui-er drama”, the dance of the fish and dragon, and the dance of the rooster. Zhaoqing – the city of cultural origin with spectacular landscapes, waterscapes and talents.

The average temperature over the year is 23°C. July is the hottest month, with an average temperature of 30°C; January is the coldest month, with an average temperature of 14°C. The average monthly rainfall is around 88.5 mm.
The official currency of Zhaoqing is Yuan Renminbi (CNY).
The official language of Zhaoqing is Putonghua. Cantonese is also widely spoken.
The customs in Zhaoqing are taken from the traditional etiquette. Visiting the flower markets in Lunar New Year, grave-sweeping at Ching Ming Festival and having rice dumplings at Dragon Boat Dragon Boat Festival are the major festivals for Zhaoqing people. Zhaoqing also celebrates regional festivals, such as the birthday of Longmu in Deqing County and the Swallow Festival in Qiaotou Town. People in Zhaoqing usually perform dragon dances or lion dances in different ceremonies and festivals.
Moreover, villagers in the Hakka villages in Jiukeng Mountain in Fenghuang Town, Zhaoqing, sing their folk songs in Hakka. It is also a unique Zhaoqing folk culture.
Lingnan’s food culture has long been described as ‘Having every ingredient that the world has’. Spices are rarely used in order to keep the original taste of the ingredients.
Cantonese cuisine is commonly served on the dining table of Zhaoqing people.It is a city of gourmet where fusions of North and South as well as East and West can be seen. Some of the most famous Zhaoqing cuisines are parcel-shaped glutinous rice dumplings in Zhaoqing style, tofu pudding and braised vegetables and assorted wild mushrooms in Dinghu style.
