Zagreb
Croatia is a Balkan state that draws much worldwide attention. It joined the European Union (EU) after declaring independence from Yugoslavia. Rapid development has been witnessed since then. Soon enough, it has become the bellwether of Balkan economic development. Zagreb, the capital city, is the best representative in the history of the development of Croatia.
Zagreb was once an ancient Roman town. Although Zagreb suffered massive damage from two world wars and the Yugoslav Wars, fortunately, historical buildings were mostly kept. The facades of the buildings surrounding Ban Jelačić Square remain unchanged like a few hundred years ago. Travellers are able to reminisce about the glorious past of Croatia. The air-raid shelter, a bloodshed military facility in the old days, has been regenerated into a lively and artisitc site for cultural events. Zagreb has successfully turned its old wounds into its unique characters, leaving in the mind of visitors a lingering charm.
Zagreb is now a popular tourist destination for its distinctively artistic aura. The coat of arms of Croatia and Zagreb lying on the roof of St. Mark’s Church has been witnessing the transformation of the city and its rise in Eastern European tourism. The red umbrellas in the Dolac Market, and those neckties and gingerbread sold in stores have even become the symbols of Zagreb that welcome visitors from all over the world.

When greeting others, Croatians prefer to shake hands and address each other with their honorific titles plus surname. Only greet with first names after being invited to. Close friends may greet each other with an embrace and a kiss on each cheek.
If invited to someone’s house, bringing flowers as a gift is preferred. Do not give chrysanthemums as they are used at funerals and gravestones. When giving flowers, please make sure the number of flowers is in an odd number.
Croatian cuisine is a fusion of culinary styles from Italy, France, Mediterranean, Hungary, Austria and Far East. It is also influenced by other Slavic countries and its neighbouring states. Croatians love pork, and use condiments such as black pepper, chilli powder and garlic when cooking. Grilled pork, Dalmatinski pršut (cured, smoked and dried ham), kulen, sheep milk cheese soup, mushroom soup and meat dumplings are some of the signature dishes. Fresh seafood can be found along the western coast of Croatia.
The most famous specialty in Croatia has to be gingerbread. Gingerbread in different shapes are popular souvenirs. Heart-shaped gingerbread is the most common motif, and is frequently used for weddings. Gingerbread craft is listed as one of the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

The major means of public transport running in Zagreb are trams and buses. With one purchased ticket, tourists can hop on three sightseeing tour buses running three different lines for city tours (Red, Green and Yellow Line). The buses are equipped with the virtual tour guide which explains the city sights on eight different languages (except Yellow line). Children would be happy to take the zero-fare mini train which runs through the centre of the city every weekend.
