Everyone may have a protecting deity in his or her heart, and so does the Kingdom of Bhutan. Khamsum Yulley Namgyal Chorten is a stupa worshipping different protecting deities of Bhutan. The protecting deities on every floor ward off evil spirits and offer protection to all living things in Bhutan.
Sitting on the ridge of a river valley, the stupa generally takes travellers around an hour’s hike that crosses a suspension bridge and goes up a hill from the town of Punakha to get to. The stupa is a four-storey solemn structure, which took carpenters, painters and sculptors nine years to build. The construction was built in strict accordance with Buddhist teachings. The Buddhist stone statue under the bodhi tree reminds people to be pious to attain the protection from the deities.
