Coptic Cairo

Address: Coptic Cairo، كوم غراب، حي مصر القديمة، محافظة القاهرة‬، Egypt

Egypt is an Islamic country. Yet, you can still see a large Christian denomination in the country. These Egyptian Christians are called the Copts, and most of them adhere to the Coptic Orthodox Church of Alexandria. The Copts, who have their own Coptic language and alphabet, are an ethno-religious group indigenous to Egypt and even North Africa. They lead a different religious life from the Egyptian Muslims.

The Copts inhabit in Coptic Cairo, which is a part of Old Cairo. It used to be a stronghold for Christianity in Egypt until the Islamic era. Coptic Cairo encompasses the white Hanging Church, the ancient Church of St. George and the special Fortress of Babylon. You can visit the Coptic Museum near the fortress to learn about their unique culture. You are also welcome to join their religious activities in the church and initiate conversations with them to better understand this unique ethno-religious group in Egypt.
