Sanmao is a representative figure in the world of Chinese travel literature. Her works are loved by many Chinese readers home and abroad. She led a vivid life travelling around Europe, Asia and Africa and finally settled in the Sahara Desert with her beloved husband Jose. There she wrote many romantic pieces of work. Apart from creating travelogues and proses, Sanmao was also the lyricist of the famous song The Olive Tree, which echoes with the feeling travellers have far away from home. Her former residence in Huangqueya in Chongqing, her ancestral home Zhoushan in Zhejiang Province, her kindergarten in Nanjing and Taipei Veterans General Hospital where she passed away are all the places that Sanmao’s fans would like “to make a pilgrimage”. Taipei, where Sanmao grew up in, is best loved by many of them. Some of Sanmao’s fans have even travelled around like their beloved writer had.
